Order is everything…
You know the twelve seconds. Alarm. Reach. Screen. Before your feet touch the floor you’ve absorbed two arguments, one ad and somebody’s holiday. It’s 6:14am and you already feel behind.
This is not a character flaw.
You’re up against a few thousand of the best-paid engineers alive, whose full-time job is to be more interesting than your work. That was never a fair fight, and losing it says nothing about you.
The bit that changed things
There’s a plain typewritten checklist that’s been going round online for a while — six steps, watermarked @keyforsuccessmind, which is how it reached me, via a video on WriterHit68‘s channel. Its central claim is smaller than most advice, which is probably why it works:
The reward isn’t the problem. The order is.
The coffee, the episode, the scroll — have all of it. But after. Take it before and your brain learns that the good feeling arrives on its own. Take it after, every time, and it learns that effort is what the good feeling is attached to.
Not more willpower. Just a sequence: a phone-free window when you wake, one non-negotiable task before 8am, a deep work block with the phone in another room, rewards you earn rather than take, a streak you protect, three honest sentences before sleep.
So I built the sheet
Not the habit — that one’s yours. Just the piece of paper: jointeffort.nl/focus
One day per screen, six cards, in order. The checklist fills itself in as you go. The streak counts itself. The rewards stay locked until the deep work block is done, because the order is the whole idea.
No account. No notifications — software shouldn’t buzz to tell you you’re falling behind. No server: your mornings never leave your device, and you don’t have to take my word for it, because the source is public. No price. It works with the wifi off.
The strange part
Most software is built to be opened as often as possible. This one is built to be opened twice a day, briefly, and then ideally not at all. There’s a line on the first card that gives the game away:
Learn these three by heart — the phone you shouldn’t reach for at 6am is the one showing you this card.
Water. Move for ten minutes. Nothing with a feed in it. You’ve just memorised step one by reading this, which means tomorrow you can leave the phone face-down across the room and do it without this. That’s not a bug. That’s the best outcome available.
Fourteen days
Not forever. Long enough for the order to stop feeling like a rule, short enough that you can see the end of it from here.
You don’t need my page to start — write the six on an index card and you’re set. But if you’d rather it kept score, it’s here, and it’s yours.
And if it helps, send it to the person you thought of while reading this. That’s the only distribution this thing has.
Credit where it’s due: the six steps aren’t mine. They come from a checklist watermarked @keyforsuccessmind, which reached me through a video on WriterHit68‘s channel. I only built the sheet. If you know who wrote it first, tell me and I’ll credit them properly here.
